  • Centers of Excellence

    Center of Excellence for smart, sustainable and entrepreneurial cities

    In ADU’s new research strategy, a Center of Excellence, including three Research Centers, has been carefully designed to serve as the focus of ADU’s research activities. The name and functions of the “Center of Excellence for Smart, Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Cities” were carefully chosen to be aligned with Abu Dhabi’s Vision 2030 as well as with the research capacity and interests of ADU faculty.

    The three research centers under the umbrella of the Center of Excellence are:

    - Research Center on Sustainable Business Processes

    - Research Center on Sustainable Built Environment

    - Research Center on Smart Services for Smart Cities

     1. Research Center on Sustainable Business Processes

    The Research Center on Sustainable Business Processes is aimed at fostering the notion of balancing the three hallmarks of sustainability in industry: social, environmental and economic. The center seeks to publish cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in this arena to increase operational efficiency, offer innovative services and improve compliance to green practices. This goal will be achieved through (i) appointing graduate research assistants (ii) outreaching aggressively to the local industry to stimulate practical research, as well as (iii) providing faculty with more technical support to publish in high-ranked journals. The research output from this center is believed to create new understandings and strategies in sustainability to make businesses excel – locally as well as globally.

    2. Research Center on Sustainable Built Environment

    The goal of the Research Center on Sustainable Built Environment is to provide innovative, high-quality solutions for a sustainable environment in the United Arab Emirates and the broader Arab Gulf region. The center specializes in advanced research in two broad areas: materials and energy in the built environment, and water and waste management. As such, the center seeks to promote the most innovative technologies and management practices to enhance materials, energy and water savings in the design of Abu Dhabi’s buildings and infrastructure, and to develop solutions that optimize the use of water and post-consumer waste as a renewable resource in the UAE. The center draws from the expertise of over forty affiliated ADU faculty and from local and international partner organizations.

    3. Research Center on Smart Services for Smart Cities

    The Research Center on Smart Services for Smart Cities is in line with ADU’s effort to promote research aimed at developing integrated smart services that will help realize Abu Dhabi’s vision of a connected and high-tech smart city. Research in the area of smart services and smart cities is necessarily interdisciplinary in nature as it integrates contributions from every field related to city living and city governance with mobile computing and other ubiquitous technological systems. This center aims to contribute to ADU’s and the UAE’s goals by facilitating high-quality applied research from diverse disciplines and fostering collaboration with national, regional and international research institutions toward smart city excellence.

  • Institutional Review Board

    Institutional Review Board for Human Subjects Research

    The Institutional Review Board for Human Subjects Research (IRB) at Abu Dhabi University is inspired by the university’s ethical and legal responsibilities to provide a mechanism to protect individuals involved as subjects in research conducted under the auspices of the University. Therefore, any research conducted at, supported by, or affiliated with Abu Dhabi University that involve human subjects must be reviewed by the board prior to the initiation of the research to ensure that the rights of the human subjects are not violated in any way, either physically or emotionally. Based on the potential level of risk for human subjects, research projects may be eligible to be exempted from being reviewed or may be subject to expedited or full review as detailed in the board’s policy and guidelines.

    The membership of the board includes a faculty member representing every college and program at the university in addition to an ethicist, a science representative, a non-science representative, and the Director of Research as an ex-officio non-voting member.

    The review process carried out by the board is based on the board’s mandating policy and guidelines, which in turn use the concept of minimal risk to decide the extent to which subject interests warrant formal and extensive review of research proposals. The following three principles constitute the basis for the review process:

    1. The subjects must give their free informed consent to participate in the research;
    2. Researchers must provide and protect subject confidentiality;
    3. Potential risks to subjects must be balanced by potential benefits of the research and must be fully disclosed to the subjects.
