  • Overview

    Civil engineering is about the planning, design, construction and operation of facilities essential to modern life, ranging from bridges to transit systems. Civil engineers are problem solvers, meeting the challenges of community planning, water supply, structures, traffic congestion, energy needs, pollution, and infrastructure improvements. Societal needs, economic conditions and public safety are paramount in the work accomplished by civil engineers. Technologies related to computer aided design (CAD), geographical information systems (GIS) and 3-D computer modeling are a necessity in all areas of civil engineering.

    Both private companies and public agencies seek civil engineers for a variety of professional positions. Many work for engineering consulting firms or construction companies as design engineers, field engineers and project managers. They also join government agencies to oversee transportation, water supply, environmental protection, and resource management. Graduates are equally prepared to pursue Master's and Ph.D. degrees in allied fields, as well as business, management and law degrees.

    The mission of Civil Engineering Department is to offer highly rewarding career oriented undergraduate and graduate degree programs aligned with the needs of the United Arab Emirates and the region through excellence in teaching, student learning, faculty scholarship and engagement in community development. Programs offered by the department produce graduates who are well-rounded in mathematical, engineering, and scientific knowledge; who have the ability to analyze, evaluate, and design civil engineering systems; who have the ability to communicate effectively; and who have acquired an understanding and appreciation for global and societal issues.

    Dear Prospective Student and Parents,

    With the largest student population in ADU, internationally recognized faculty, and a great market reputation our ABET-accredited Civil Engineering Department has justifiably been named a “premier” program in ADU.

    Civil Engineering is the oldest and most flexible engineering profession that graduates have the chance to plan, design, construct, and manage: towers and villas; sewage and water systems; highways, roads, and transportation systems; desalination and wastewater treatment plants; tunnels, bridges, dams, and canals; harbors and ports; and facilities for solid, chemical, and nuclear waste.

    Civil Engineers are leaders in the economic development of the UAE, building and managing multi-billion Dirham projects that transform UAE to a knowledge-based, sustainable, and diversified economy. Civil Engineering is an integral part of the UAE’s National Strategy of Innovation in: Renewable energy, water, transportation, technology, and education.  Civil Engineers must have knowledge of the most recent technological developments - even of  satellite technology to use in climate change studies they are conducting - management and planning skills, and familiarity with policies and regulations in order to design solutions that are socially acceptable, sustainable, and culturally sensitive.

    With an employment rate of over 91% our graduating students are working in some of the most prestigious local, national, and international companies and agencies, and some have risen to leadership positions in a few years.
    Outstanding Civil Engineering students have the opportunity to pursue a 3+2 program to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from ADU and a Master’s degree from our partner, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.

    The future of Civil Engineering at ADU is even brighter with our recent move to the new Engineering building, which hosts four civil laboratory facilities that are among the best in the UAE.

  • Facilities

    Laboratory experiments are important for students to achieve student learning outcomes and ultimately, the program learning objectives. The primary physical testing laboratories in the civil engineering department include 1) Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Laboratory, 2) Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory, and 3) Construction Materials and Structures Laboratory.

    Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Laboratory

    Fluid mechanics and hydraulics laboratory is equipped with to demonstrate concepts related to the fundamentals of fluid mechanics and hydraulics such as a hydrostatic bench to measure the fluids properties such as density, viscosity, surface tension, pressure, and hydrostatic forces. The laboratory also includes hydraulics benches and flow meters to measure fluid discharge and verify the Bernoulli equation. A flume is available to demonstrate the flow characteristics in open channels. Other setups include a wind tunnel to determine the drag and lift forces on different objects and hyro-machinery setups to demonstrate the centrifugal pumps and fans characteristics. Undergraduate courses that use these laboratories include CIV242L Fluid Mechanics Laboratory and CIV343 Hydraulics.

    Soil Mechanics Laboratory

    The Soil Mechanics Laboratory of the Civil Engineering Department is fully equipped and supported by highly qualified technical staff to respond to the needs of academic institutions, researchers, engineers and construction industries in addition to teaching lab.

    Some of the major tests that can be performed at Soil Mechanics Laboratory include, 1) Specific gravity, 2) Atterberg Limits, 3) Sieve analysis (Mechanical & Hydrometer), 3) Soil Classification, 4) Permeability test, 5) Proctor Test (Standard & Modified), 6) Field Density Test, 7) Consolidation, 8) Direct Shear Test, 9) Unconfined Compression Test, 10) Traixial Test

    Construction Materials Laboratory

    The Construction Materials Laboratory supports research and teaching goals of the Civil Engineering Department. The laboratory provides faculty and students with capabilities to assess various fresh and hardened concrete properties that may affect the performance of concrete structural elements, in addition to some asphalt related testing equipment. Some of the equipment and experiment setups in this laboratory include: compression testing machine, rapid chloride ion permeability test equipment, Vicat apparatus, sieve analysis test setup, slump test setup, concrete flexural testing machine, water permeability test, air entrainment meter, marshal stability and flow test, bitumen content using centrifuge extractor, bitumen content using ignition method, and CBR test, concrete Rheometer, curing tank, scales, and drying ovens.
