  • Overview

    Chemical Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the conversion of raw materials to useful products and with energy by applying principles of science and engineering. It is concerned with the design, operation and maintenance of facilities which range from refineries, petrochemical and pharmaceutical plants to food and materials industries, and even nuclear-waste processing plants. Chemical Engineering is concerned with developing processes that are more efficient in terms of materials and energy usage, and which are environmentally friendly.

    Chemical engineers have helped develop atomic science, polymers (plastics), paper, packaging, dyes, drugs, cosmetics, fertilizers, foods, textiles, water produced by desalination, and chemicals used in everyday life. They have plenty of job opportunities in the oil and gas industry, in petrochemicals industry, in food and drinking industry, water treatment and desalination plants, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, composite materials and polymers industry,  inorganic materials processing plants such as aluminum plants, power generation and in renewable energy  industry, nanotechnology, and many other industries.

    The B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering program at Abu Dhabi University has been developed in response to the high demand for chemical engineers in the U.A.E. from the growing petrochemical, polymer, pharmaceutical, and food industries in the country, combined with the expansion in water desalination projects in the region. The program has been designed according to international standards. This ensures that graduates of the program will be uniquely qualified to design, analyze, and test wide-ranging solutions for state-of-the-art chemical engineering systems and processes. The program provides chemical engineering students with the opportunity to learn through a combination of theory and lab work. This mix of theory and laboratory work allows students to think things through and then apply their ideas in a variety of real life situations. Students also learn to diagnose problems and develop a variety of solutions. It is a challenging four-year curriculum that integrates courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics and chemical engineering to produce a professional engineer capable of designing and analyzing all aspects of modern chemical engineering systems. 

    Mission

    The educational mission of the chemical engineering undergraduate program is to provide students with a premium education through a well-developed curriculum that is fundamental, yet broad and flexible. The program seeks to produce graduates who are well-rounded in mathematical, scientific, and technical knowledge; who are prepared for the successful practice of chemical engineering with sufficient depth to continue their education beyond the baccalaureate degree; who have the ability to analyze, evaluate, and design chemical engineering systems; who have the ability to communicate effectively; who have gained sufficient awareness of the current and emerging industrial practices through participation in industrial internship experiences; and who have acquired an understanding of and appreciation for global and societal issues and are thus prepared for a career path towards leadership in industry, government, and academia.

    ChE is the most diverse field of engineering offering solutions to problems in the energy, health and food sectors, and the environment. These four fields constitute the whole spectrum of human activity and serve the livelihood and well-being of humans. Studying in our department and becoming a Chemical Engineer, you will find yourself working in one of the very many facets of the above four fields. In addition, you will be prepared to go further and deeper into science and engineering by continuing your studies at the graduate level. 

    Our Department, a young and dynamic ChE Dept., is in a great developmental phase with state-of-the-art specialized ChE laboratories just being completed and added to the existing science labs, and equipment that has been chosen specifically for the thorough training of our students in all aspects of ChE. That way, our students get a very good hands-on experience, which is complemented by modern software for process simulation and design. A carefully selected internship in one of the many relevant industries in the UAE or even abroad rounds up the training of our students. 

    This combination of excellent practical and theoretical training is topped-up by the personalized approach and interest each student receives by all our faculty members.     Unit Operations Laboratory

    This lab comprises of equipment such as the Continuous Distillation Column, Liquid-Liquid Extraction Column, Fluid Friction equipment, Gas Absorption Packed Column, Tray Dryer, Fixed and Fluidized Bed and Filtration Unit.

    Chemical Reaction Engineering & Process Control Laboratory

    This lab consists of reaction equipment such as Batch reactor, Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor, Tubular reactor, and Process Control Units.

    Process Technology & Instrumentation Laboratory

     

    Liquid Diffusivity Measurement, Gas Diffusivity Measurement, Temperature Measurement Unit and Thermal Conductivity Unit.
    Heat Exchangers (Shell and Tube, Plate and Concentric type)

    It currently encompasses the assorted Laboratory Instruments and Glassware as well as provides space for setting up experimental set-ups for research.

    Computer Laboratory (DG-22A)

    This computer lab consists of 24 PCs capable of running Aspen HYSYS, Matlab and a plethora of other engineering applications.
