A Commitment to a Greener Future

At Abu Dhabi University (ADU), sustainability is more than an initiative, it is a core value embedded in our campus culture, academic framework, and community outreach. We are dedicated to fostering environmental responsibility, empowering student leaders, and actively contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

From student-led projects to university-wide strategies and national high school competitions, ADU is building a comprehensive ecosystem for sustainability action and innovation.

1. Our Strategic Framework: Aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

ADU strategically aligns all sustainability-related activities, courses, research, and policies with the UN SDGs. Through the ADU Connect platform, every sustainability student related event is tagged with relevant SDGs, enabling structured tracking, reporting, and impact measurement.

The Student Affairs Department and other units have integrated sustainability into their core operations. More than 30 sustainability related activities were organized for students in the last few years. Only this year, a total of 11 sustainability-focused events were organized across our Abu Dhabi and Al Ain campuses, engaging 421 students.

These initiatives covered environmental awareness, climate action, sustainable living, health, and creative expression.

3. Dedicated Training on the Social Aspects of Sustainability

ADU provides specific training and development opportunities focused on the social dimensions of sustainability.

We recognize that sustainability encompasses not only environmental protection but also social equity, well-being, community health, and responsible citizenship. Our training initiatives in this area include:

  • Healthy and Safe Living Environment Workshops: These mandatory sessions for residential students cover personal well-being, hygiene, fire and room safety, and creating a positive, respectful shared living space directly addressing social sustainability within the campus community.
  • The "Lens on Sustainability" (Photography Category): In our national high school competition, this category encourages participants to capture social narratives related to environmental justice, community action, and the human impact on natural heritage.
  • Collaborative Problem-Solving in the Innovation Challenge: Students working on social-enterprise solutions or community-based systems learn to address the human and social feasibility of their ideas, not just the technical aspects.
  • Student Affairs Co-Curricular Programs: Many events focus on collective responsibility, behavior change, and community building, key pillars of social sustainability.

These programs ensure that ADU graduates understand the interconnectedness of environmental health, social equity, and economic viability, preparing them to be holistic sustainability leaders.

4. Future17 SDGs Challenge

Abu Dhabi University has recently been invited to become part of the Future17 SDGs Challenge. Future17 is a by-invitation only Consortium of leading universities, founded by QS Quacquarelli Symonds and the University of Exeter, that have agreed to collaborate in research and the development of an international program to develop 21st century skills, which addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals. This involves students from all of the academic parties collaborating together on projects proposed by companies, global organizations and charities.

6. Digital Ecosystem for Sustainable Engagement: ADU Connect & The Graduate Attribute Program (GAP)

Sustainability at ADU is driven by intelligent systems that ensure engagement is tracked, personalized, and impactful. Our AI-powered platform, ADU Connect, is the digital backbone of this effort, moving beyond one-off events to create a sustainable culture of continuous improvement. It personalizes each student's journey by recommending co-curricular activities—including sustainability workshops, volunteer events, and governance meetings—based on their interests and skill gaps.

This ecosystem is further strengthened by the Graduate Attribute Program (GAP) , which guarantees that every student develops the competencies needed to be a future-ready sustainability leader. Through GAP, skills like ethical responsibility, global awareness, and systems-thinking—directly aligned with the UN SDGs—are intentionally developed and tracked. The AI-powered Co-Curricular Transcript within ADU Connect provides a verified, measurable record of each student's sustainability-related achievements, demonstrating their holistic development to future employers.

7. Vibrant Campus Life as a Sustainability Lab: Student Engagement Office (SEO)

The Student Engagement Office (SEO) transforms campus life into a living lab for social and cultural sustainability. We believe a vibrant, inclusive, and engaged campus community is the foundation of a resilient institution. The SEO curates a dynamic calendar of events—from cultural celebrations like UAE National Day and International Day to educational workshops and awareness campaigns—that directly foster SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities).

Every event managed through ADU Connect is an opportunity for students to practice global citizenship, cross-cultural understanding, and collective responsibility. By participating in SEO-led activities, students learn to navigate diverse perspectives, build inclusive communities, and contribute to a campus culture where social sustainability is a lived experience, not just an abstract concept. Your engagement is automatically tracked, contributing directly to your Co-Curricular Transcript and showcasing your role in building a sustainable campus.

8. Student-Led Communities as Engines of Innovation: Student Clubs

Beyond the formal Green Club, ADU’s extensive network of over 50 student clubs forms a powerful grassroots engine for sustainability. Clubs dedicated to culture (e.g., Emirati, Korean, Sudanese Club), arts (Art & Design, Music Club), professional development (CIS Club, Innovation in Healthcare Club), and social action (Volunteering Club, Tolerance Club) all contribute uniquely to our sustainability mission. They organize events like cultural fairs (SDG 11), reading competitions (SDG 4), blood donation drives (SDG 3), and mental health awareness campaigns, addressing the social and human pillars of sustainability.

These student-led entities are models of participatory governance and responsible leadership. By empowering students to create and lead clubs—from a "Future Sustainability Club" to a "Self-Care Club"—ADU fosters a culture of initiative, collaboration, and problem-solving. This bottom-up approach ensures sustainability is continuously redefined and advanced by the students themselves, building a sense of ownership and belonging that is critical for long-term institutional and societal resilience.

9. Foundational Pillar of Social Sustainability: Student Wellbeing & Inclusive Support

True sustainability is impossible without equity, wellbeing, and inclusion. ADU’s comprehensive Student Counseling and Students of Determination (SOD) Services are therefore not ancillary supports, but core pillars of our sustainability framework. These services directly advance SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). By providing confidential mental health counseling, crisis support, and personalized accommodation plans for Students of Determination, we ensure every member of our community has the opportunity to thrive.

Our commitment is codified in the "Students of Determination Teaching Guide," which empowers faculty to create accessible learning environments. This systemic approach to inclusivity—removing barriers to participation in academic and campus life—embodies the core sustainability principle of leaving no one behind. A resilient, sustainable university is one where diversity is celebrated, wellbeing is prioritized, and every student is empowered to contribute their unique potential.

10. Shared Governance as a Model for Institutional Sustainability: The Student Council

ADU demonstrates that sustainability requires accountable and participatory governance. Our Student Council is formally integrated into the university’s decision-making structure, ensuring student voice is not just heard but actively shapes policy and strategy. This direct participation in leadership meetings, academic committees, and disciplinary panels aligns with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). By empowering student representatives to co-create solutions for campus improvements, financial policies, and even sustainability initiatives, we build a transparent and resilient governance model.

The impact is tangible. Student Council contributions have directly influenced areas from campus infrastructure to student wellbeing programs. By documenting and publishing meeting minutes, ADU upholds the highest standards of transparency and accountability. This experience transforms student representatives into ethical leaders who understand how to build and sustain fair, effective institutions—a critical competency for driving sustainability in any future career or community role.

No Poverty

Sustained economic growth cannot be achieved without social inclusion as the whole of society has a role to play in the development of a country. Federal Law No. 13 of 1972 and its amendments by the law (No.2) in 2001 was issued by the Ministry of Community Development.

Introduction

Sustained economic growth cannot be achieved without social inclusion as the whole of society has a role to play in the development of a country. Federal Law No. 13 of 1972 and its amendments by the law (No.2) in 2001 was issued by the Ministry of Community Development.

(MOCD) as the first law to provide social benefits to members of the community to ensure and sustain the high quality of living for all UAE citizens. The Ministry continues to work today on enhancing social inclusion for all members of society where social benefits are extended to cover twenty-one segments of the community.

The UAE government has a future vision to change the culture of social support from the current ‘social welfare’ model to ‘sustainable social development’ that encourages independence and growth of families across the UAE.

ADU is determined to overcome all challenges that ADU and our students might face as a result of the poverty. We continue to be dedicated to empowering and inspiring outstanding students to pursue their goals. Our scholarships and financial aid programs are available to all students who want to fund their academic programmes. We consider it our duty to provide equal opportunities to students interested in pursuing higher education, enabling them to contribute to society regardless of their financial situation.

In additional to financial aid, ADU scholarships are being provided to outstanding students, through seven main categories, including the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Scholarship, the President’s Scholarship, the University Scholarship, the Academic Scholarship, the Athletic Scholarship, the Alumni Scholarship, and the Family Tuition Waiver.

We take pride in attracting the brightest students in the UAE and offer them generous support, to excel in their studies. Our Scholarship and Financial Aid programmes are part of ADU’s corporate social responsibility and are influenced by the UAE’s great leadership. ADU is constantly finding pioneering and innovative ways to support and facilitate the needs of our students to help them achieve their academic degree.

It is particularly timely that this campaign comes on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the UAE's nationhood. We at LuLu Group International are proud of our identity as a 'homegrown' UAE brand and see this participation in the 'Let's Support Their Future' campaign as our humble contribution to the nation that gave us so much to build upon."
