Abu Dhabi University is committed to supporting the UAE’s national vision for a sustainable future and formally pledges to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in alignment with the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. Through a practical and data‑driven Climate Action Plan, the University will reduce emissions across its campuses by prioritizing energy efficiency, responsible resource management, smart digital monitoring and continuous improvement in facilities and operations. Abu Dhabi University will focus on direct emissions reductions across its operations, progressively address selected indirect emissions and apply carbon offsets only for residual emissions using credible UAE‑based solutions. This commitment reflects our responsibility as the UAE’s largest private university to operate efficiently, responsibly and in support of national climate goals while safeguarding institutional resilience and long‑term performance.
At Abu Dhabi University, we recognize that climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time, with direct implications for environmental stewardship, economic resilience and the wellbeing of current and future generations. As the UAE’s largest private university, Abu Dhabi University accepts its responsibility to contribute meaningfully and pragmatically to the nation’s sustainability agenda.
In alignment with the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, Abu Dhabi University formally commits to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 across its operations. This commitment reflects our support for national priorities, international climate science and the global effort to limit the most severe impacts of climate change.
Our approach to Net Zero is measured, data‑driven, and operationally grounded. Through the implementation of this Climate Action and Net Zero Plan, Abu Dhabi University will focus on reducing emissions across its campuses in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dubai by prioritizing energy efficiency, responsible resource management, digital monitoring and continuous improvement in facilities and infrastructure performance.
By 2030, the University commits to achieving the following interim targets:
These targets have been established to ensure progress that is realistic, measurable and aligned with institutional capacity, while laying the foundation for deeper decarbonization beyond 2030.
Abu Dhabi University’s Climate Action Plan follows internationally recognized frameworks, including the GHG Protocol, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidance and national sustainability standards. The University will prioritize direct emissions reductions across Scope 1 and Scope 2, while progressively addressing selected Scope 3 emissions where data and influence allow. The use of carbon offsets will be limited to residual emissions and restricted to credible, UAE‑based solutions, ensuring environmental integrity and national alignment.
Governance of this commitment will be led by the Sustainability Advancement and Integrated Facilities (SAIF) function, supported by the Environmental Sustainability & Climate Committee and overseen by the Vice Chancellor’s Office. Progress will be monitored through transparent reporting, performance indicators aligned with international sustainability rankings and periodic review to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.
This commitment reflects Abu Dhabi University’s belief that universities play a vital role in supporting national transformation not only through education and research, but also by demonstrating responsible and resilient operations. By embedding sustainability into how we manage our campuses and resources, we aim to contribute constructively to the UAE’s Net Zero journey while safeguarding the long‑term performance and resilience of our institution.
Through collective effort, informed decision‑making and responsible action, Abu Dhabi University is committed to doing its part in building a sustainable future for the UAE and the wider region.
Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has committed to a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the national Year of Sustainability agenda. Under the vision of being “Guardians of the Planet”, the strategy establishes a long‑term framework to reduce environmental impact, strengthen social responsibility and embed sustainability into education, research and operations in line with international best practices.
The strategy is structured around three integrated sustainability pillars, supported by cross‑cutting enablers:
Cross‑cutting themes are partnerships, data and analytics, innovation and technology, communication and transparency, and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) to ensure effective implementation and governance.
The strategy includes quantified KPIs covering renewable energy uptake, GHG reduction, water and waste reductions, curriculum integration and sustainability research productivity. Progress is monitored and reported transparently via institutional sustainability reporting, supporting global rankings and continuous improvement.
Pillar number 1 forms the backbone of ADU’s Climate Action Plan, focusing on measurable reductions in environmental footprints across campuses.
This Climate Action Plan establishes a roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across ADU’s Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dubai campuses.
The university’s campus footprint comprises a total gross floor area of 162,135 square meters, with the main Abu Dhabi campus accounting for 118,021 square meters and the combined Al Ain and Dubai campuses making up the remaining 44,114 square meters.
This plan aligns with:
The total fuel consumption for ADU amounted to 83,820 liters of petrol (192.78 tCO2e) and 138,852 liters of diesel (361.01 tCO2e) for ADU Transportation & Generators.
The facility's energy profile includes electricity consumption of 14,738 MWh (2,947.6 tCO2e) and district cooling consumption of 36,978 MWh-thermal (7,395.6 tCO2e), while on-site renewable energy generation is currently under study and consideration.
Total domestic water consumption reached 125,809.34 cubic meters, while irrigation water consumption reached 296,237 cubic meters and was sourced from Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE).
A total of 146.19 tons of waste was generated, resulting in a cumulative carbon footprint of 89.5 tCO2e.
Scope | 2024 |
Scope 1 Emissions | 501.67 tCO2e |
Scope 2 Emissions | 10,340.03 tCO2e |
Scope 3 Emissions | 92.5 tCO2e |
TOTAL | 10,934.2 tCO2e |
Under the ADU 2030 Climate & Sustainability Targets, the institution aims to achieve a carbon emission reduction of 30 %, 20% reduction in energy intensity, meet 20% of electricity demand from renewable energy, reduce water consumption by 25%, reach a 20% waste diversion rate, lower vehicles per capita by 25%, and attain 100% coverage of smart monitoring through building management systems and meters.
Focus: Efficiency, data, governance
Expected outcome:
Achieve 2030 climate and sustainability targets while stabilizing operational emissions despite continued campus growth.
Focus: Structural emission reduction
Expected outcome:
40–60% absolute emissions reduction (vs. 2024 baseline)
Focus: Residual emissions & neutrality
Expected outcome:
Net Zero GHG emissions by 2050
The KPIs are aligned explicitly with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UI GreenMetric, THE Sustainability Impact and the QS Sustainability Rankings.
