Prof. Nilesh Kumar Sharma

Principal Investigator, Cancer and Translational Research Lab, India

Professor Nilesh Kumar Sharma is a distinguished researcher and academic at the Dr. D. Y. Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute in Pune, India. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) and the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences (FMASC), he leads a prolific research program focused on cancer biology, tumor heterogeneity, and the discovery of novel metabolic biomarkers. His groundbreaking work includes the invention of a patented Vertical Tube Gel Electrophoresis (VTGE) system for "metabopsy"—a non-invasive diagnostic technique using biological materials like nail clippings and milk teeth to detect cancer and inherited metabolic disorders.

Prof. Sharma has an impressive publication record of over 125 papers in high-impact journals, has secured significant research funding, and holds multiple patents for his innovative diagnostic and therapeutic discoveries. His research extends to developing metabolite-mimetic anticancer agents and exploring the role of DNA repair mechanisms and epigenetics in drug resistance. An accomplished mentor, he has guided numerous PhD, postgraduate, and undergraduate students, and plays a key role in institutional leadership, accreditation, and national committees, including serving as a NAAC assessor for the Government of India.
