Driving Innovation Through AI and Intelligent Robotics.

The institute’s supporting laboratories, including the AI in BioImaging Research Lab and the Robotics and Mechatronics Research and Development Lab, provide advanced environments for multidisciplinary research, innovation, and hands-on learning. These labs focus on AI-driven biomedical imaging, intelligent robotics, autonomous systems, and real-world engineering solutions, supported by high-performance technologies and international collaboration to advance impactful research and practical applications.

AI in BioImaging Research Lab

The AI in BioImaging Research Lab is a jointly operated research facility between Abu Dhabi University and the University of Louisville, providing all necessary resources to support advanced biomedical imaging and AI-driven diagnostic research. At the University of Louisville, the lab occupies approximately 800 sq. ft. of dedicated research space in Lutz Hall and is equipped with 18 high-performance computing workstations (dual-Xeon quad-core processors at 3.2 GHz, 64 GiB memory, Nvidia Maxwell GPUs, and 2 TB RAID storage).

The facility maintains secure, high-speed network connectivity that enables seamless data acquisition and collaboration across campuses and external partners. The laboratory is staffed with three postdoctoral associates, 20 graduate students, and 11 undergraduate researchers. Its core research mission focuses on developing innovative technologies for image-guided surgeries and computer-aided diagnosis, supported by multidisciplinary collaborations with more than 25 biomedical, mathematical, and computer science researchers. The lab regularly participates in the Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeting through a joint ADU–UofL booth.

Abu Dhabi University established its branch of the BioImaging Lab in 2015, extending the successful collaboration between the two institutions. The ADU facility hosts up to 15 undergraduate and graduate researchers and contains state-of-the-art deep learning workstations, medical image databases (CT, MRI, sMRI, fMRI, X-ray, and private U.S. datasets), and specialized software for machine learning and image processing. The lab has produced multiple high-impact publications co-authored by researchers from both universities and provides hands-on research training, including programs in biomedical signal processing and computer-aided diagnostic systems. GPU-enabled workstations are supported by MATLAB’s Parallel Processing Toolbox and Distributed Computing Server to accelerate deep learning workflows.

Robotics and Mechatronics Lab

The Robotics and Mechatronics Research and Development Lab at Abu Dhabi University was established to support advanced experimentation, prototyping, and innovation in intelligent robotic systems. The lab serves as a multidisciplinary research environment where faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate teams collaborate on cutting-edge projects in AI-driven robotics, autonomous navigation, mechatronics, and human–robot interaction.

The lab is equipped with modern robotic platforms, sensing modules, embedded systems, and high-performance computing resources, the facility enables end-to-end development—from simulation and algorithm design to real-world deployment and field testing. The Robotics Lab promotes collaborative innovation, industry engagement, and hands-on learning, providing students with opportunities to participate in funded research projects, competitions, and prototype development that address real-world engineering challenges.
