In today’s increasingly global competitive environment, managers face no greater challenge than that of strategic planning and strategic management. Guiding a complex organization through a dynamic, rapidly changing, and increasingly globalized environment requires the best of judgment. Strategic management and planning issues are invariably ambiguous and unstructured, and the way in which management responds to them determines whether an organization will succeed or fail. This module will introduce practical ways in dealing with the aforementioned challenges by focusing on strategic environmental analysis, development of the mission, and vision as part of the organizational strategy in a globally competitive environment.

This module prepares managers to use basic concepts, frameworks, theories, and methods of strategic management to attain a sustainable competitive advantage for their organizations. A special emphasis is placed on organizational missions, visions, objectives, and goals with a particular reference to their relationships with organizational strategy.

Dr. Avraam Papastathopoulos

Dr. Avraam Papastathopoulos is currently an Associate Professor of Management at the University of Abu Dhabi. He has a diversified international experience of 20 years in various positions such as external auditor (Ernst & Young), manager of strategic planning (Svimservice Hellas), Head of Business & Economics  Department (Metropolitan College in collaboration with University of East London), Deputy Director of Academic Quality. He teaches various courses including Strategic Management, Business Research Methods, Quantitative Methods in the MBA and DBA on-campus programs. His scientific and research interests mainly focus on strategy. Special emphasis is given to strategic management, tourism, organizational behavior, Blockchain technologies and their impact on innovation, internationalization and business performance. He has published in the Tourism Management, Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel Research, Tourism Management Perspectives, International Journal of Tourism Research, Tourism Review, International Journal of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research, Sustainable Development, Harvard Business Review etc. Finally, he is a member of the Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA), Strategic Management Society (SMS), International Sustainable Development Research Society (ISDRS), European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) and the European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB).
