Professor Charilaos Mertzanis and Professor Avraam Papastathopoulos, two of the University’s top researchers from the College of Business, recently published high impact research in the Annals of Tourism Research, which is ranked internationally as an A* journal.

The Professors explained, “We constructed a composite index of epidemiological susceptibility to predict tourist flows around the world with a high degree of accuracy. The index measures how ‘susceptible’ a country is to epidemiological risk or how ‘ready’ a country is to respond to epidemiological contagion risks effectively. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic highlights the importance of this research. Its predictive effect on inbound and outbound tourist flows around the world is strong, and it could be a useful policy tool to predict and manage the consequences of epidemics on the economy”.

Professor Philip Hamill, Associate Provost for Research and Academic Development, said, “I congratulate Charilaos and Avraam on publishing world-class research that is timely, important, and supports the knowledge economy in the UAE in the tourism sector”.
