ADU Research Teams Receive Four Prestigious ASPIRE Grants for Their Outstanding Projects

The College of Engineering (CoE) at Abu Dhabi University (ADU) announced that four research teams were awarded prestigious ASPIRE grants from the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC).

The College of Engineering (CoE) at Abu Dhabi University (ADU) announced that four research teams were awarded prestigious ASPIRE grants from the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). The approximatly four-million dirham grants support pioneering research projects which aim to develop technologies that can be applied in real life. The teams received these grants in recognition of their outstanding research that promotes innovation in strategic sectors which will contribute the UAE’s knowledge-based economy.

The ATRC champions research and innovation to contribute to developing strategically important sectors in the UAE, and the wider economic objective to further support the UAE’s knowledge-based economy.

The projects awarded cover a range of engineering disciplines and have been assisted by researchers from national and international academic institutions, including Khalifa University, NYU Abu Dhabi, Zayed University, and co-investigators from France, Greece, and the USA.

Professor Philip Hamill, Associate Provost for Research and Academic Development at Abu Dhabi University, said, “We are immensely proud to be recognized as an entity that strives for continuous progress when it comes to innovation, research, and advanced technology. The recognition and support from the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) help us to investigate important problems and provide solutions which will support innovation in the UAE.”

Professor Philip added, “This undoubtedly contributes to ADU’s standing as a leading academic institution, both regionally and globally. The performance of the teams also reflects ADU’s international partnerships with connections to co-investigators from leading universities.”

The research team led by Professor Ioannis Zuburtikudis, Chair of Chemical Engineering Department at ADU, investigates how graphene, the thinnest material known to man at one atom thick, would aid in enhancing the process of water filtration. The research project aims to have a substantial global impact by helping ensure universal access to safe and affordable drinking water.

As part of the project led by Professor Mohammad Alkhedher, Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department at ADU, the team is studying the potential of employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict electrical failure in lithium-ion batteries, especially in the UAE’environment. The research is oriented around equipping the community with access to affordable and renewable energy sources.

The third research team, led by Professor Adel Khelifi, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Information Technology at ADU, investigates whether the integration of CT imaging and breath biomarkers can aid in the early diagnosis of lung cancer.

The fourth research project, led by Professor Samer Al Martini, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at ADU, investigates whether 3D printing concrete mixtures will promote sustainability and social distancing in the UAE construction industry.
