Greening the Supply Chain

As we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic the importance of supply chain disruption has been highlighted as business struggles to meet consumer demand.  From the perspective of sustainability, research in the field of green supply chains has recently gained attention in the developing world. Studies in the environmental sustainability field have predominantly addressed the carbon footprint in the manufacturing industries. However, they lack a comprehensive and tangible description of ‘greenness’. Faculty in the College of Business at Abu Dhabi University, Professors Mehmood Khan, Mian Ajmal, Abdullah  Marzouqi and  Bader Al Nuaimi investigate this issue to identify factors involved in greening a supply network; both upstream and downstream. Their paper develops a framework of related indicators and measures the extent of greenness in service industries in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Prof. Khan explained that these findings were important and support achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: industry, innovation and infrastructure. SDG 9 seeks to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. Prof. Khan said "Identifying the indicators of greenness can help bridge the existing gaps in the literature and help to make green service supply chains in the UAE a reality ".
