The World Health Organization (WHO) first announced COVID-19 a health emergency during January 2020. The novel coronavirus has since spread to over 200 countries and has mushroomed into a global public health and economic disaster impacting the $90 trillion global economy. Professor of Finance, Elias Kampouris, in the College of Business with colleagues from Zayed University, investigated the impact of the pandemic on stock markets to understand its influence on our modern financial system in terms of connectedness and the risk of financial contagion between global financial markets encompassing the European Union, Eurozone, Europe, the Americans, Asia, Middle East and Africa. Professor Kampouris said “Our research provides important insights for investors in terms of improving portfolio selection during times of crises and for policy makers tasked with promoting financial market stability by showing the importance of assets according to their centrality”.
