Background Information

Under the Patronage of H.E. Hussain Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, Abu Dhabi University is organizing the Seventh Undergraduate Research Competition. The competition will be held at Abu Dhabi University, on April 29th, 2019. This competition aims at encouraging universities to promote scientific research among undergraduate students and to make it an integral part of university education, given the significance of scientific research in advancing the country to the top ranks. It also aims to instill life-long learning, and to enhance career opportunities for young people as well as foster entrepreneurial mindsets and attitudes in education, research, and innovation.

The upcoming competition is in direct support of the UAE government’s drive toward fostering innovation. The United Arab Emirates is being recognized worldwide as a major promoter of knowledge based economy and it is necessary that students get more actively involved in research to further develop the country’s innovation systems.

The competition over its life span has witnessed an impressive growth in attracting undergraduate students from all over the UAE. The substantial and steady increase in the number of submissions and attendees is an important indicator that the competition has already become the premier and the largest such national event that targets undergraduate students from across all universities in the UAE and all major disciplines. Last year, we had over 250 research papers presented in 14 parallel tracks submitted by 33 major universities in the UAE.

This year we are introducing two major changes in the competition. Firstly; a new category 'Innovation' has been added to the competition. Innovation and entrepreneurship have been recognized as cornerstones for the UAE's economic enhancement, and are at the heart of the national knowledge economy strategy. These are also essential 21st century skills that are required from all graduates in the future job market. Secondly; the competition is no longer limited to the UAE and has now been expanded to the whole GCC. ADU largely welcomes students from all across the GCC to participate in the competition and avail this great opportunity.

Student research is learning at its best. It’s creative, absorbing and challenging and allows students to experience first-hand the process of scholarly exploration that characterizes academic life. The students’ presentations in the one-day symposium will be judged by a Scientific Committee with members from academia and industry, and winners will be announced in the closing session of the competition. The awards will help the research endeavors of undergraduate students at their own universities and will strengthen their critical and analytical thinking skills. It will enhance students’ confidence in their research abilities, allow them to explore new frontiers in their fields of study and prepare them for graduate level studies.

Your participation in the research competition will give an excellent opportunity to interact with some of the country’s best new minds, as the leading student researchers from other universities around the UAE and GCC will also attend and participate in the competition.
